.) The poop really isn't THAT bad- Due to the chemicals that are in disposable diapers (we in the cloth world call them "sposies") it causes urine and stool to smell even worse. When we began cloth diapering we were VERY fearful of what our nursery, house, diaper bag, etc. would smell like after those dreaded "blow out" diapers. We learned to keep a sticky air freshener in the diaper pail, what kind of "diaper pail" worked best (an $8.00 trash can with a swinging lid from Target) and how often to wash diapers so they didn't get completely gross (every 2-3 days at MAX!)
.) Everyone has an opinion about cloth- The older generation thinks its "so cool" because they "did that back in the day". Then they want to learn all about those "modern things" because they just used towels and burp clothes. The new age parents are all about protecting the environment and think its great because we are protecting the landfills. Then they want to discuss all the water we're using to wash the diapers though. Crunchy parents think its great because we aren't exposing our babies to chemicals and wasting products. Lots of medical professionals (not all!) get mad because they can't weigh diapers at medical appointments or think theres something unsanitary about the whole process (and will blame every rash and illness on the diapers). Modern parents want to know why you would waste your time on something so "old school" and talk about how "nasty" the process might be.
.) Its really not as hard as it looks!- There are TONS of different cloth diapering options! From ones that seem just like disposables but more pricey (AIO) to the seriously cheap option (Prefolds) to ones that you have to stuff (Pockets) and are at a "medium price point". There are tons of other types too but the point here is you can get as easy or difficult as you want. You can also find something for pretty much every price point (but remember that overall cloth is less expensive than disposables!)
.) They're AWESOME for photo shoots!- Not only that but they are just plain cute! There are so many different designs and styles to dress up your baby's bottom! I'm pretty sure that we have used at least one cloth diaper for every photo shoot we've done! The only thing more adorable than a naked baby is a puffy cloth butt!
.) Its not as time consuming as it seems!- I get a lot of people that ask "oh that must take you so much time!" It really doesn't! Once you get a wash routine down (and there are tons of great websites/Facebook groups to help with that) it probably takes you as much time as running to the grocery store every time you run out of disposable diapers! The best part about this is you can find a routine that works for YOU and YOUR FAMILY!
So did I convince you to try cloth? If you'd like to learn more about cloth diapering I've listed a few awesome links below, and the best part is if you have any questions I'm around to ask! (If you have a postpartum doula they can also help you learn the ins and outs of cloth!)
